Re: Magnetism and mechanical watches

: Since this had generated interest and questions
: here before, I thought I'd post some
: findings about my SMP and magnetism.

: After my watch started loosing more than 8
: secs/day I found that it deflected a compass
: needle and was therefore magnetized. At the
: time no-one answered my question " did
: an otherwise accurate SMP deflect a compass?
: ". Having got mine serviced, I can now
: say it doesn't - at all.

: However, I'm still unsure what's required to
: demagnetize a mechanical watch. Some say the
: back needs to be removed, others don't. When
: you're dealing with a dive watch with seals
: this is an important factor. Please post if
: you know about this process. Also what a
: good watchmaker would charge.

: Also, mine was demagnetized under warranty, at
: least the authorized dealer's 1-year
: extended warranty - it had been mentioned
: here before that it should not be covered
: since it is not a fault of the watch design
: or manufacturing. Thankfully the dealer just
: received a quote back from Swatch saying it
: would be C$440 to fix, without it mentioning
: what was needed or what caused it. I guess I
: may have just been lucky (for once Swatch's
: substandard service practices worked in my
: benefit!) Let's hear your experiences.

No idea of the answer to your question....but do you happen to know how your watch got magnetized in the first place???
