It's not going to be a "period piece," at least insofar as that would mean placing it over half a century ago (when Ian Fleming wrote the book). That doesn't mean there won't be some soft imagery designed to allude to a time set something other than in 2006 (think the first Batman movie w/ Michael Keaton, cars, gothic buildings - but blended with contemporary technology).
The term they're using is "reboot," which I understand to mean, "yeah, it's today, and you have a lot of preconceived notions about this character; but let's pretend like we're starting at the beginning: What we want to have as a blank sheet of paper, we will; what we want to use to 'suggest' connections of things to come, we'll do that, too."
Really pushes the envelope on the foundational "willing suspension of disbelief," as it's called.
And you're right about the car, Jason (Michigander, right?). Not only is the Aston Martin DBS more advanced than advanced, but current rumor is that Daniel Craig also gets a DB-5, following in the footsteps of Pierce Brosnan, I guess. Ironic, I think, that the Aston Martin DB-5 replaced his "old" Bentley, and now it's the "old" car.
Supposedly Casino Royale one-ups Brosnan however, tells us how Bond acquires the car.
In a pretty clever way, too, if you ask me!
A media attorney rather close to things told me that the current contract w/ Omega precludes any "physical alteration" of its watches in the film. (I haven't seen the contract myself, and those of you who know me here know how I am about documentation and chain of custody.) If that's true, then, the circular saw Q-modification must remain the purview of the Rolex 5513 for now.
