Thanks for all the advice. In the end, I decided to go with the 2254.50. It meets all my needs. While it might have been more practical to choose a quartz model (and isn't that always the case anyway), I just couldn't bring myself to do so. In addition to wanting a watch which would withstand the requirements I indicated, I wanted a fine wristwatch, so mechanical was the way to go. Now the only hard part is remembering that I have a watch that is made for--and will hold up in--the demanding conditions I will face. I'm afraid I'll be tempted to spare such a fine watch from scrapes and wear!
