Pivots

So I am reading an article about the movement in the Planet Oceans (Same as in the Aqua Terras) the 2500, and they were highlighting the upgrades of the 2500C. Im sure many of you have read this, as it is is availible from the TimeZone OMEGA Forum and here for that matter http://www.watchtime.com/archive/wt_2005_03/WT_2005_03_050.pdf anyways what I noticed as ONE of the differences is the conical shaping of the pivots to reduce friction. Can somebody educate me about what pivots are and how significant this particular change is, moreover, when a watch is serviced are the pivots restored anyways makeing the changes "less necessary" if one services his watch as recomended? I hope my questions are clear. If anybody has any thoughts please share.
