Here's another alternative.
In Response To: Do I keep this, or send back? ()

Hi Lorenzo,

I remember the watch. I thought it looked great.

I just checked the Omega prices in Bienne

Here's the link to the price list

The 552 movement is catagorized as group 3 - Old caliber.

Here is the Caliber list

So Omega Bienne say they will fully repair this watch for 420 CHF ( which is about £245 ) plus postage.

There is no extra VAT to pay.

It will come back looking like new & have a 2 year Omega guarantee.

You tell them what (cosmetic) work you want done - if any.

I fully understand the decision you have to make. ( heart against head ).

If YOU really want the watch, I'd try to convince you to use Omega. As you can see the price is VERY reasonable. You get a (transferable) guarantee. IMHO you have to go a LONG way to beat Omega ( Bienne ) quality.

I would also argue that you will probably have to do a service on the wtach at some stage. you are just doing it right at the begining of your ownership, rather than during or towards the end of its time with you.

This way the watch has cost you £500 ( which is still a tidy sum ) but you will have complete peace of mind.

Should you decide NOT to repair the watch & return it. If you still want a watch of this style, are you going to find another quite as nice as this one ? & If you do, will you have the same problems ?

Then, a last suggestion. If the seller has offered you a refund, he sounds like a reasonable bloke. Why don't you present him with your 2 options ( Swiss Time & Omega ) & ask him for a partial refund which you can offset against the repair costs.

I'm sorry to read of your troubles, but a good service at Omega & then the watch is "sorted". And probably "sorted" for many a year to come.

All the Best

Steve
