If you don't have your watch overhauled or inspected every 3 to 5 years, you should never wear it near water. This is because the seals become porous with age, even in the best diving watches.
Although I own a Seamaster which is supposed to be water resistant up to 150 mtrs., as a precaution, I never bring it in contact with water, except for a little rinsing.
My philosophy is that unless you are a diver who needs to use a watch as a tool, there's no reason to bring your precious watch near water, period.
When I'm on holiday, I always leave my watch at the hotel safe or in my room when I go swimming.
