Thank you both for your advice. From link Turbinator has provided, and after considering Seismic Sam's advice and philosophy as well, I might go with (I assume?) the fine grade pad, as that would be least abrassive (correct?).
I don't mind the "memories" of a great trip or fun or meaningful event on my clasp. I could just do without other "memories" (from the mall, doing the laundry, desk diving at work... Some stuff I love to remember, other stuff I can't wait to forget.
