As personally I would find Rolex far more guilty of marketing hype than Omega ever was or is....
I also would be of the opinion that the Caliber 31XX from Rolex certainly isn't a high grade movement, some interesting features yes, but nothing special, especially not in its execution in terms of finish work. Andrew Barbain's review of the Submariner points out my issues with the Rolex design and personally I don't see them being any more durable or reliable than your average 2892, something which I believe Walt Odets and a few others "in the know" might have agreed with.
Also as far as vintage Rolex is concerned I view that as a moot point as the company has a horrible reputation towards servicing vintage pieces, so who cares if you find yourself in a prediciment were you cannot get your watch to work again because of no parts....
Rolex has a reputation of being prestigious because of clever and good marketing and they were consistant, had Omega done the same thing they would have been right along side Rolex...
With Rolex's stance on vintage I certainly wouldn't be buying them as a long term investment...
