I thought the same when I saw the watch. As you know, I've had (and am still having) an immense saga with Omega with regard to my Speedmaster Day-Date. I typed in the new ref. no. into google, and got to (I think) a Russian website, with a whole load of Omega watches, most of which look like updated/reformed Speedies. I called my AD in London, who referenced his books and said that the Speedmaster Day-Date will have a COSC certified movement and that the watch specs WILL be changed. The case will be 40mm, and the water resist upto 100m. Added to this, the dial will be modified in terms of hour markers and the hands are changed slightly.
All this will cost in and around £1800 and will be released early in 2007 in the UK. Omega do not have any information on their website, and to be honest, I have found next to nothing on the internet about this watch, indeed anything about cal. 3606.
I am a little disappointed that I did not hang fire and wait until next year to buy it. A double shame really as the AD said he was due to close business soon as he is currently semi-retired and wants to take a new direction in his life. He will have colsed up shop by the time the watch comes out. I wish him well...hopefully I'll be able to get hold of the 2220.80.00 at at decent discount before he closes (controversially, I like the look of this SMP compared to the previous)
Any insider information with regard to the movement would be appreciated.
