OT: Bond Fans - Bond's Walther P99...
Just an FYI to follow-up on an earlier post about Bond's Walther P99 in Casino Royale. I was surprised to see that Bond was wearing the newest Omegas and driving the newest Aston Martin while using an older version of the Walther P99 (it had received significant cosmetic changes in 2004). I contacted the P99 Product Manager at Walther Headquarters in Germany, and he told me that Walther does not directly supply the firearms to the Bond producers. Instead, film prop companies buy various firearms from different manufacturers and then convert them to shoot blanks before renting them to the film producers. Apparently the prop company used by the Bond people wasn't aware of the changes to the P99 since the last Bond film was produced.
According to Walther's Product Manager, these prop companies are supposed to keep in touch with the firearms industry to stay on top of the latest models, design changes, etc., but this one appeared to have fallen through the cracks. In fact, Walther's Product Manager didn't even know that Bond was using an old version of the P99 until he saw the film himself. So, hopefully we'll see the correct, newer P99 in the next film (tentatively titled "Risico" and due for a November 2008 release).
