Problems with Leather Straps

I'm on my second leather strap for my Speedmaster in under 2 years. After the first one broke I made a point of being extremely careful with the second but it still didn't last. At a cost of $175 Canadian I won't buy a third one. Does any one out there have similar experiences or suggestions (aside from the steel strap)?
