OK, I will try to explain (and I hope I understand your problems correct).

1. The crown is in locked position, that is not opened.
2. Turn the crown until it "clicks" open. It kind of "pops out".
3. No, you can wind your watch. But really if your watch has stopped it should start if you just shake it (or I am wrong here?).
4. If you pull the crown out one more step, you set the date. Another step and the watch stops and no you can set it.
