Partial BS
In Response To: $400 repair? ()

: $400 repair? My authorized Omega dealer quoted
: me a $400 repair bill for my 5yr old Omega
: Seamaster pro 300. All of a sudden it
: started only working intermittantly. She
: rambled on with a total hard sell about how
: "movement is all fouled up. he will
: completely disassemble and reassemble watch.
: replace all springs/ gaskets that need it.
: etc, etc." Basically sounds like
: they're building a whole new watch. The way
: she went on/on made me feel it was totally
: unnecessary and she just wanted to
: "sell" this service.
: Claims this price is "significantly less
: than sending it in to Omega for repair.
: blah, blah, blah." What do you gents
: think?

The price that you were quoted is about what it costs to send the watch to Omega for a complete overhaul. Actually, I think a full service from Omega is about $380 USD which includes all of the above plus case/bracelet refinishing. So, based on the description of the work, its in the ballpark of what it would cost from Omega, but certainly not "significantly less".

With that being said, we don't know whats wrong with your watch, but more than likely the movement is not "all fouled up". Probably needs a routine service, including cleaning and lubrication. More like the $100-$200 variety than the $400 variety, but problem is you are not a watch expert, and sounds like the dealer wants to sell you the full monty, so whatever is wrong with it, you are probably gonna get hosed. My advice is to check with another dealer if there is one in the area to see what they think. If there is not, I would probably go ahead and send it to Omega directly. I believe the work would come with a 1 year warranty.
