Lost or stolen and no serial number..

In the event of your watch being lost, stolen or otherwise destroyed, how would you identify it to the proper agencies (law enforcement, insurance) without a serial number?

For a Timex or Casio its probably not a problem, but I would think in the case of a luxury watch, the serial number would provide some proof of ownership and existence.
