Seamaster 120 Date Set Problem

I have a Seamaster 120 Ref #166.073, circa 1969. It's been serviced and keeping excellent time. However, the qwikset date feature does not seem to work consistently...sometimes it does, sometimes it skips a number (moves two numbers at a time), sometimes it doesn't work at all, like yesterday.

As you know, to set the date on this model you have to pull out the crown to the maximum "out" position, then push the crown in all the way, and pull it out again all the way, repeatedly, to cause the date numbers to advance. (At least that's how my watch works. Is this normal???)

The dealer from whom I bought the watch says that the date setting mechanisms in these watches are notoriously touchy. True???

I'd value comments from those of you who have a strong knowledge about this topic.
