I purchased a watch just over two years ago, from an authorised dealer about 30 miles away. It has started to lose 10 - 12 seconds a day so I thought I would get this sorted under warranty as it's a co-axial model and covered for 3 years.
I went into my local Goldsmiths and asked if they could deal with it, after stating a load of falsehoods about my watch, he told me that they could send it back to be sorted but would charge me £25 as I hadn't bought it from them, I can live with that.
He asked me what was wrong with it, I told him it was losing about 10 seconds a day. He then looked at me like I was stupid and said that was within the tolerance and that they would not be able to sort it out under the warranty. I explained that the tolerance for a Chronometer was +6 / -4 seconds per day so I could not understand what he was saying. He said that the difference between +6 & -4 was 10 seconds so it was within the tolerance! I told him I disagreed with him, but he wouldn't have it and said they could send it back but I would be wasting my £25.
He then asked me how much time it was losing a week and I said about 70 seconds and he told me that it would be dificult to regulate an automatic to within 1 minute per week.
I explained that when I first bought the watch it was accurate to around 1 second per day, he looked surprised as if i was lying.
Now I know I am right and my watch is well outside of COSC spec but I am 1% beginning to doubt myself now. Would someone be so kind to confirm I am not going mad?
How can anybody with such little knowledge be let loose in a shop selling such things?!
