Thanks for your reply. Excuse my ignorance but is the stem the long metal pin that sticks out of the movement?
So it seems then that I have snapped the stem as part of it is in the crown still - is that correct?
I did remove the crystal no problem but I couldn't see any way to remove the movement without removing the crown first and the only way I could see to do that was to pull it. Oops!!

: you can do. The stem is removed by pressing a small release
: button inside the movement, which must be accessed through the
: crystal. The stem is then put in a pin vise and the crown is
