Re: Bargain hunting, Summer 2009
In Response To: Bargain hunting, Summer 2009 ()

: We have discussed how it is a buyer's market out there. And how, if
: you have the resources and the inclination, you can pick up
: bargains.

: We have also discussed how watch dealers and jewelers are hurting.
: In some cases, it has seemed like they will do anything to get
: some money in the door, and some watches out of the door.

: With that introduction, I give you three watches purchased this
: summer, all from dealers, all locally.
: -- One new, two preowned.
: -- One in house movement, two from other famous manufactures but in
: watches from manufactures
: -- Three brands
: -- Two stores
: -- Sales prices were all less than 50% of current or original
: retail
: -- Total investment was considerably less than a 50th anniversary

: You have, from left to right

: 1970s Audemars Piguet Ultra Thin automatic with the AP
: 2120 inside

: 2007 Omega Deville Hour Vision with calibre 8500 fully visible from
: 5 of six sides

: 1990s/2000s Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Self Winding 42002/000J
: with the VC 1312 inside

: One of the remarkable things is how the thicknesses and size of
: watches have changed

Mind if I give you my opinion on all three watches? Didn't think you'd mind. The VC is easily my favorite. Why? First off, it's a VC, rich history, impecable
finishing, beautiful dial, perfect size and it was a deal. I won't mention the gold, don't have to.
The Omega? It's a really nice watch, Love the case design, with the saphire sides on it. great finish work and an in house movement. What's not to like?
I'll tell you. I know it's petty and maybe even stupid, but, everytime I see the word "deville" on an Omega, I think about some pimp in a big beat up cadillac. I
told you it was dumb.
The AP? Love the watch, hate the size. That's it. Beautiful watch, I just can't get the 32 MM size. Looks great on you, though. Nice score, Sam. Looking
forward to wearing that VC in the near future.........David
