Hi Ahlyne, and welcome to the forum.
Though I am not as smart about horology as some here, perhaps I can broaden your horizons somewhat.
Firstly, I admire your search for a suitable gift for your partner. It seems you have given it the thought that he deserves. Whilst you mention skeletonised watches, especially with your engineer's view in mind, it is not the only way, or perhaps even the best way to go.
I'd suggest you open your mind to something like this.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7483-OMEGA-Speedmaster-Professional-MOON-Sapphire-Back-/180584819949?pt=UK_Jewelery_Watches_Watches_MensWatches_GL&hash=item2a0bb1aced

Or this

This particular seller is held in high regard, and I for one can vouch for his authenticity. That being said, my main point is to highlight the "Clear Case back" as well as the Speedmaster Pro. A watch, designed in 1957, and basically the same today as it was then. That must say something, not to mention the only watch that NASA qualified for the moon. Any engineer I am sure would be in raptures over such "engineering."
I also feel that a watch with a clear case back is more adaptable to the uses that it may encounter, (esp. The Speedmaster Pro). It is not such a fashion statement as a skeletonised watch, and seeing as this particular watch has been in fashion since 57, I doubt you could go wrong. Actually a clear case back gives a better view of the movement than any skeleton watch I have seen.
Good luck, and I hope this info helps.
As said, there are others more knowledgeable than I, so this is just my personal preference.

Whatever your choice, it is a beautiful gesture, though i know what I would like. Speedmaster Pro with a clear case back. Have a look around.
