>I believe the automatic remains the: watch of >choice Yet it seems when it comes to accuracy >and reliability you can't beat the quartz.
From an engineering point of view (i.e. function), the Quartz is smaller, lighter, more accurate and more shock proof. The automatic will work at lower temperatures.
From an aesthetic point of view, there isnt much difference - I would rather have a sweeping hand than a tick, but its a small point imho.
I think it is the mental aspect that makes the biggest difference. If you like to know you have a wonderfully crafted, complicated piece of old fashioned design, made with ultra modern technology then you will be drawn to the automatic. If you appreciate the sheer performance of the quartz, you may regard the beautifully engineered automatic movement as appropriate as putting a 1920s Rolls Royce engine in a modern car - its nice to know its there, but may not be the best solution.
It all depends on your mental state !
