It is simply a *second* hour hand for you to track the time in a different location. On most GMT watches, the additional hour hand goes around the dial once every 24 hours--so there is no confusion on am/pm with it. The 24 hour scale will be printed on the bezel or the dial.

While it is called "GMT," you can set it to any second time zone you want.

Its useful for people who have to deal with international time, offices in a different time zone, or travel and want a reference to time at their home city. You can even set it to your local time to make it easy to read local time in both 12 and 24 hour mode.
