What makes expensive watches expensive...

Accuracy has NOTHING to do with price. A $50 Timex is as much or more accurate than a $60,000 watch.

What the basis of the high prices for some of these really high end watches are several things:


  • Handcrafting of cases and the mechanisms (most watches under $20,000 are mostly to entirely mass produced)

  • Very limited production watches, so that few if any other people will own the same watch as you

  • The appeal of rare and expensive things, enhanced by prices so high that they make the items very exclusive

  • Unique features that are complex to produce in entirely mechanical watch movements (even though the same feature is easily done on a $50 quartz novelty watch)
