What is of concern here is not the metal itself, but the FINISH on the metal.
The SMP has a mixture of brushed and polished finishes on it. You really need to use different levels and types of abrasives on each finish--which you cannot do except by hand when the two finishes are side by side.
But a popular technique among watch collectors is to use OxyClean (yes, that stuff they sell on infomercials) to clean the bracelets. You can buy it in smaller sizes at WalMart. When I used it on the bracelet of my Rolex, I was astounded by the crap that came out of the inside of the links.
