Derek,
You bring up an interesting point. As a non-swimmer, why should you be wearing a quality diver's watch. Here's a few thoughts on the subject.
If only pilots wore pilot watches and only divers wore dive watches, there wouldn't be enough of a market to sustain affordable pilot or dive watches.
Ruggedness in a timepiece is certainly a virtue. The two environments that most challenge a timepiece are the aerospace and maritime environments. Therefore, if one wants a rugged watch, one is going to buy a pilot or dive watch. What other type of rugged watch would there be? The Explorer, I suppose, is another type of performance watch, but what makes it so? Shock and water resistance, which are the attributes of any "performance" watch.
So what's the big deal? I'm an aviator who wears a dive watch. Does that disqualify me from something? Moreover, am I not allowed to wear a dress watch?
Enjoy your vacation. My mom lives in Charleston, loves Hilton Head. I'll get there myself someday.
