Here is my experience. In 1972 I purchased a Seiko Quartz watch and an Omega Speedmaster 125 automatic. Still have and use both watches. The Omega has been overhauled three times roughly at a cost of $200 each time and repaired three times at a cost under $100. The Seiko has been running continuously, never been repaired and only expense has been battery replacements every 2 to 3 years. I prefer the Omega for its appearance but the Seiko wins hands down for accuracy and reliability. If I were to buy a watch today offered in either quartz or auto I would, without the least hesitation select quartz.
At the risk getting my fingers slapped for
: bring this up again i have to ask.
: I have wanted a SMP fro years and i can finally
: almost afford. Apart from the size question
: i have been struggling with the movement
: dilema for months. I had pretty much decided
: to get the Automatic when my diving
: instructor who wears a quartz SMP told me
: that you may have to replace the whole
: movement every ten years or so because it
: wears out?? Is this true? It is the first
: time i have heard it mentioned? Surely if
: you have the watch serviced at the
: appropriate times then it should last a
: lifetime?
