: Are there any considerations or
: disadvantages to going with the smaller
: watch. i.e. if they could make the mechanism
: that small in the first place, why didnt
First, the movements inside the two watches are *exactly the same*! People have a common misconception that the mechanism inside the watch always fills the inside of the case. Not true! And really, why the heck must it be that way anyway? Often the size of the watch is dictated entirely by style considerations. If the watch case is bigger than required for the mechanism (as in the case of the full size SMP) then the extra area is filled with a spacing ring.
Second, judge the size of the SMP for you based on how it *looks* on you and don't overthink it. The psychology of how the watch fits you visually often goes *against* the logic of small guy=small watch, large guy=large watch. Frankly, wearing a smaller watch when you are shorter or skinnier than average can *emphasize* your below average frame.
