Sounds like it could be the End-Of-Life Indicator. Did you just buy it new from an authorized dealer? If so, I would have him check it out. Remember, that battery has been in that watch since it was made, using up power. The watch could have been sitting in a storage room or on display for quite a while. The only way to know for sure is to contact Omega with the serial number to find out when it was made. I bought a new Omega once that was 18 months out of the factory.
