Cheating? Is that what our ancestors said as they crowded round the first primitive sundial back in the mists of time? "You ought to be able to tell the time by squinting at the sun-god, not by using some devilish machine! - look, it stops ticking when I put my head in the way!"
Incidentally, ever tried to do the calculations for a sundial which is accurate at the place at which it's made? I tried once, but eventually gave up and did it by trial and error over about six months! I can assure everyone that a sundial bought at your local garden centre will not pass the COSC test [I believe it's + or - an hour for sundials - but they only have one vertical and no horizontal tests, for some reason]!
