just like cars really
In Response To: Auto vs. quartz...yes, agian!! ()

Porsches make a good example. An air-cooled 911, for example, isn't for everybody. They are for the enthusiasts. The masses are better off with a boxster or some other car like it. Not that either one is more reliable than the other. In fact, an air-cooled 911 is probably more durable over a period of 20 or 30 years as in a mechanical watch. In fact, there is probably no other sports car that can take as much punishment. Like an Omega or Rolex automatic. But again, not for everybody. I am an air-cooled 911 man and only wear mechanical watches. So does my wife who has been in an unsuccessful attempt to destroy her Rolex Oyster since she was in high school in the late 80's. If either she or I gave a damn about being 10 seconds late once a month somewhere, we would have to sit down and analize the futility of our lives. Luckily, we don't have to. She and I find that life is way too short to own anything that does not possess a certain personality and character. As long as it works reliably and efficiently. Not to mention the ability to tinker with the thing. The tv, computer and house appliances are the only exceptions. I also find that someone who has never owned anything but a Timex, will love a higher end quartz in the form of a Tag Heuer, Seamater Quartz or Porsche Boxster. Whereas someone who has had upper end watches that work well, will not see the thrill in that quartz any more. They will want that automatic, or Carrera RS.
