It is not a matter of *just* diving. If you expose your watch to water by swimming, showering, or other water activities, you should still make sure your watch is protected by ensuring its water resistance.

If you have NO water activities, then you should be quite fine merely servicing the watch only when it is due for a mechanical cleaning -- every year or two.

I must admit that I am pretty lax about it and have tended to have my mechanical watches serviced less often than that.
