Omega hand fell off after 5 days !!!

I need some help here. I am a bit perplexed. I rec'd an Omega Constellation Chrono as a gift. The watch was purchased from Asford.com, supposedly brand new, with all serial numbers intact. After 5 days the chronometer big seconds hand fell right off, after a few uses of the stop watch function. First the hand would not return to the 12 oclock position, and after each use, would actually get further away from 12.
Can somebody tell me if that seems familiar, for instance Ashford or somebody tampering with the mechanism, or something as horrible as that.
Asford took the wach back for a full refund, with no problem, but I was left with a bad taste as far as buying another Omega. I know they are not an authorized dealer, but I thought they sold legitimate watches.
Please, any input is highly appreciated.
Andrew.
