I think that Wally would appreciate that...

In Response To: A true HERO in every sense of the word... (Chicagoland Chuck Maddox)

Dear Jeff, Chuck and all,

I too am deeply saddened by the news of the death of Wally Schirra.

I remember reading or hearing somewhere that we should only be sad at someone's passing if their life was wasted. That certainly wasn't the case with Wally. He lived an extremely full life by all accounts. Still I feel sad because of the relentless of time and for the fact that all of us on this tiny little craft cast adrift in a hostile universe that's, as Wally would say "the environment is trying to kill us!", we'll all miss him.

From all your accounts he was a great astronaut, and a magnificent human being.

I suspect his accomplishments as a pilot and astronaut speak for themselves. To try to sum Wally up in a very few words... He was a VERY genial man. He really put people at ease. Like an old friend he was fun to be around.

His passing will be mourned by all who share a love of exploration and of the wonders of the human spirit.

I'm sure his passing will be mourned by all who met him in person to, regardless of their own intrests. He was the sort of guy you won't forget.

Chuck - I look forward to reading more about your recent meeting with Wally, and hope to learn more about his fascinating character.

I'm confident you will have that opportunity to do so in the next few months.

I personally will wear my Speedmaster (105.102-65) this weekend as a tribute to his memory.

I think that's a great way to remember Wally, I believe he'd appreciate that. He was wearing his Gold Speedmaster (a gift from Omega) when I met him.

Regards,

Teng

Pleased to see your post, wish it were for happier reasons. Look forward to seeing more of you here.

Sincerely,

-- Chuck
