Make sure you unscrew the crown first, so that it pops out. Wind it in this position. In my AT, I find it very easy to turn, with a very, very slight "grittiness" which is the winding action. It's much easier to turn and has less "clicking" than my Speedmaster Pro.

It has overwind protection. If you hold the watch to your ear, you can tell when it is fully wound because you will hear a "tick" every few turns or so. It's very low in volume so you have to hold it to your ear. When you hear the ticks it's fully wound.

Make sure to push in the crown, and screw it back into the case. Be gentle and don't overtighten it. This will ensure water resistance.

Once it's fully wound, if she wears it every day it will not need to be wound manually.
