Your right about the Day-Date, only reason I was interest was for the 2nd time zone.

Consider a nice Vintage Flightmaster or a Seamaster with a 24-hour bezel as an alternative:

I've been to a couple of the chain ADs in my area and they have a very limited selection of Speedies to look at.

Where's that?

This week I was going to try a few of the single store ADs and since I'm in the Chicago area thought I'd check-out Jewelers Row.

For new watches, I'd check out the shops around Jeweler's row first. The Maller's Jewelry mall is more for older stuff in my experience.
I don't know if Macy's [now that Marshall Fields has been bought out and converted] remains an AD or not [but I suspect not]. You might wish to check out Smart Jeweler's if you get out by them.
There is also a Tourneau at Water Tower Place [along with a very cool watch shop in the lower level's who's name I can never remember. There also was a Goldsmith's jewelry store [few watches, mostly estate stuff, but very interesting stuff - well worth the visit]. I'll send you a referral to the Forum Favorite AD for when you have decided on a model.

I'm so new to this that the thought of buying anything other than new from an AD is pretty scary.

Then stick with a trusted AD or start out with something inexpensive while you learn the ropes... A nice 1960's or 1970's Tissot Chronograph is a good place to start.
