E-mail Spam - some details
In Response To: Spam ()

Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear about the spam.

Here's what I know.

We , here at Chronocentric, don't use any mailing lists. As a Co-mod here, I can't access the subscriber list & have no way ( that I know off ) editting the list. Having said that I will have another dig around in a few minutes.

The people who send spam, have programs that "search" the internet for E-mail addresses( know as "robots" or "spiders". Since the Chronocentric forums are "open" forums ( ie do not require you sign on & have a profile etc etc ), anyone choosing to enter their ( genuine ) E-mail address, makes this E-mail address available to the Spam robots.

An easy way to avoid this is to put something in your E-mail address like this

Steve-at-yahoo-dot-com

or

Steve@NOSPAMyahoo.com - not very good

Steve@SPAMLESSxahoo.com - better

Steve@REMOVETHISyahoo.com

This usually confuses the robots ( I don't belive they are very intelligent, but I would try to use an "extension" that a person can understand, but a program might not notice , hence the examples above ).

I have a Yahoo account. it's free. it has no mailbox restriction ( OK I can't receive E-mails larger than 32 MB - but I can recieve an infinite number that are less than 32MB each ). It has a very effective automatic spam filter. Whilst I get a large amount of spam, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. This is the E-mail address that I use for forums.

My final tip. NEVER, repeat NEVER, reply to spam. If you reply they KNOW it is a real E-mail address, if you don't reply, they don't know.

I hope this helps.

Steve
