Watch Overhaul

Noob here and this is really not a specific Omega questions....but,..I purchased a Hamilton Khaki Chronograph in 1999 as a present to myself for completing my Ph.D. I had wanted a Speedy Pro (or even the reduced) but could not afford it at the time. Anyway, i went for the Hamilton (it has a Valljoux 7750 in it) and have enjoyed it immensely over the past 8 years as my 4-5 times a week watch.

Anyway, last week , while horsing around with my kids, the bracelet loosened and the kids hooked it and it got ripped off my wrist and crashed to the floor after hitting a bar stool. Well, two pins were bent, the bracelet was completely off and the sapphire crystal has a crack from 12 to 6.

I contacted my local (fortunate) Hamilton dealer and he said he could repair the crystal for a reasonable amount - but indicated that mechanical watches should be serviced (overhauled) every 4-5 years so I am due for a service on the watch that would run nearly half of what I paid for the watch. The watch still runs fine (I lose about 1-2 minutes a day but I am a desk jockey),

I had never heard of the service/overhaul before and wanted to check with people in the know so I thought of this forum. The retailer is well established and has been around for many years.

Since the Speedmasters are similar in that they are mechanical, I figured you folk would know!

Your opinions and comments are appreciated on whether this is a valid request or if I am being taken for a ride!
