: preferable to the other?

Both are more than fine for normal watches--the screw back is an advantage only when a high level of water resistance is needed. The snap back used on the Speedmaster is way more than sufficient for its 30 meter depth rating. Similarly, the Speedmaster does not need a screw-down crown.

To achieve the 300 meter depth rating, the SMP needs much a tighter seal at all the openings in the case. So the back and crown screw in to place.
