Seamaster Pro 300 Chronograph - S/N vs Year Made

Hi all,

Just a query - I've recently purchased a pre-owned Seamaster Professional 300 Chronograph Diver Titanium - a la "James Bond" style but in chronograph form. I think the reference no. is 2298.80. Please see the pics. As the watch was missing its original box and documents, I wanted to find out its age and hence checked out its serial number which was laser etched at one of the lugs (situated near 7 o'clock). The s/n begins with 486XXXXX and based on what I can gleaned from the internet, this s/n sequence would place the manufacture year of the watch at around 1984/85. This is surprising as i believe this style of watch only came on to the market from around 1993 onwards and hence my query - why the discrepancy between the s/n and the year the watch was made? I'm a novice collector and I have not had the watch opened up to check its movement. The watch do looked authentic and the aging of the dial seems to indicate the watch is at least 15 years old (my guess). I've placed the links to the Picasa pictures of the said watch. Please note I have photoshopped the serial number to make it more legible. If anyone have any ideas, theories etc - I appreciate it.

Regards,
Chris
