serial # vs. no serial #

all things being equal, would one be better off getting an Omega with the serial number vs. one without but at a significant discount?

i'm on the verge of purchasing the new white-faced seamaster gmt (possibly at ashford or world of watches). i'm sure these reputable online merchants are selling genuine products...although they clearly indicate that the serial numbers have been removed. their sale price is significantly lower than an authorized dealer - $1995 vs. $1300.

would greatly appreciate any advice or experiences dealing with grey-market merchants.
