: Thanks for the reply Gary.
: The crown is indeed signed, but it's plating is
: pretty well gone.
: It appears that it is original. There is damage
: visible in the pic to the 9 o'clock marker.
: I was surprised that there was no oxidation in
: the scratches. Isn't the movement made of
: brass?
: The more I look at it, the more I like it. I
: already switched the large black leather
: band for a slightly reddish brown lizard
: strap. Now my wife says it's to dressy to
: wear with jeans.
: ;-)
The movement plates are brass with a gilded coating but I don't know the percentage composition of the brass and this may affect the rate of oxidation. Well-kept watches often remain untarnished for decades even where the gilding has been rubbed of or removed, perhaps the small amount of oil in the atmosphere within the watch inhibits oxidisation?
I'm sure the brown strap is a good choice,I have a dark brown lizard skin on my 752 movement Seamaster - I found that Black was an overstatement, and I agree with your wife, with jeans and casuals, it's the best choice.
I have a black strap on my 561 pie-pan Consellation but I only wear that with a suit or semi-formal wear.
