I hate to say it but I think Fabrizio is probably correct. Not only can you see at the sharp edges where the original plating was probably worn through, you can see that what once were sharp scratches have rounded edges from either wear or polish. There is enough wear to make me pretty sure that the original plating was worn through and that the case was re-plated without taking the original polish off.
