Hi Mich
I think I have the same opinion as you although I admit I am no way an expert.
First: Who would gold plate a beaten up watch? Its must cost quite a bit.
Second: As you say the gold is soft so as the watch is beaten and get dings the gold wont chip off but stay on the surface.
Abel: I will try to get the young master interested in this ground braking issue;-)

: Hi Peter,
: I do not think it is polished or replated, it has been a daily
: rocker and is worn out .
: The Heuer plating is quiet thick,( once I failed to remove it
: mechanically... ) One still see the loss at the edges.
: A new plating do not show the sharp edges of new steel sun burst
: and gold is more weak as steel sun burst, so the attrition is
: more.
: Mine is a little less worn than yours, but look similar on the
: surface.
: cheers
: Mich
