It really looks a sturdy piece of military equipment, and I agree its scars remind of battle marks on an old armour.
You have been rewarded for your patience by finding an item which has aged remarkably well on the whole, the lume especially seems to have faded really graciously.
Didn't know about the screw-in crown, interesting feature on a such a watch: the Fortis Cosmonauts chrono, also powered by the Lemania 5100, shares the same feature by the way.
