Not Really Sure What "Derek Bell" Means

Personally, I'm not sure what a "Derek Bell" actually means.

But here's what I consider a Viceroy to be:

  • economy dial -- polished markers, with white inserts
  • numerals 1-through-12 on the hour recorder
  • brushed steel hands, with red tips and red inserts, and thin luminous material
  • Tachymeter (T) bezel
  • Cal 12 movement (though some early ones have the 11-I)

I believe that people use the name "Derek Bell" for the earlier ones, that (typically) have:

  • 3-6-9-12 on the hour recorder
  • polished steel hands, with luminous inserts (but no red)
  • MH bezel
  • Call 11 or 11-I movement.

We know exactly what Siffert wore and we know exactly what McQueen wore; I don't think that anyone has established exactly which execution Derek Bell wore. A skeptic might say that a "Derek Bell" is a 1163 Autavia that is being offered for sale at a high price.
