Re: For me, the interest in motor sport came first...

Funnily enough Mark I do have a Boxster S and 924 S and I really like Porsche's continuous approach to racing and their racing cars. I have no desire to have a Mercedes, mainly because I can't afford a 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe. I love the posters though, even though some of the 1930s ones (specifically the ones celebrating race wins in Germany post-1937) contain swastikas! I tend to avoid those ones. I also have a load of CMC Mercedes models. Some of the smaller Mercedes posters (I have two of the big ones, no pictures though)

I have been going to Le Mans since 1995, when the McLaren F1 won. For about 10 years I had a press pass, and I started writing articles and supplying them to magazines just so I could show the race organisers and they would give me a pass for the next year! The poster on the left (below) has the signatures of the nine drivers in the three Audis which finished first, second and third. I found all the drivers that year and asked them to sign the poster

It's good to see decent artwork on posters but the old ones by Beligond are proper works of art

This is one of my favourite photos from Le Mans. I had spoken to Frank Biela the year before and he seemed surprised that I wanted to talk to him and not one of (what he thought were) the more famous drivers. I've always liked him, this is 2006 and he is getting into the car to start the race, he went on to win it.

Here's another from 2001 when Guy Smith had to retire the Bentley with a failed clutch. It was 7pm, I had one set of dry shoes and socks left and on a whim put them on and went to the track next to the campsite I was in, just in time to see the Bentley come round the corner at snails pace. It pulled over right in front of me and the brakes (and possibly the clutch!) were red hot. No other press got the shots, two press photographers arrived 10 minutes later but promptly had a fight and were arrested!

I don't profess to be a professional photographer, I never had a zoom lens and used normal amateur cameras but it meant I had to try harder! I gave up in the end, the ACO and police made it no fun, I had access-all-areas passes, including into the pits, and used to have to argue to get anywhere. Lots of work, no fun. I enjoy it much more now. It's a shame Peugeot are not competing anymore, they made some lovely cars
