Your suspicions are correct and these had PVD coated cases - black, green and in your case Pewter. The coatings did not wear very well so its understandable that it may have been polished to match the earlier case finish or a replacement case was used. It still looks very good to me.
Here is an example of a black PVD coated Carrera of the same era.
