Yes, I've seen it estimated as over quarter of a million for years now. Never really caught on that much over here, despite the British winners of late. I guess the most popular it got was when Mansell drove. In my lifetime at least, it probably caught some attention when Clark and Hill won.
The closest I've gotten to it was seeing the Borg Warner trophy in Macy's in NY:
