In the later years of Autavia production -- after the Viceroys -- Heuer made many variations, but none of them seem to have been produced in anyhere near the quantity of the Viceroys.

I think you have it right when you suggest that the greater number of economy versions (Viceroys) on the market today stems from the fact there were so many more of these produced 30 years ago. The regular Autavias were selling for $200 in the stores . . . the promotional price on the Viceroys was $88 . . . Heuer could hardly manage to produce enough of these to meet the demand.
: It seems like all the Autavia's on ebay are the
: Economy version (with thinner case, lower
: profile bezel, button cutt-outs, and
: Tachymeter spelled out on bezel) and not the
: larger thicker case with MH ( 60 minutes, 12
: hr bezel).
: Outside of the obvious that they sold more of
: the cheaper version, and thus more are out
: there.
: I prefer the thicker case, sometimes called the
: Super Autavia case? with the thick link
: bands....and find very few of this type. I
: sthere any other tell tale signs (ie, red,
: orange swirl marks in registers, etc) to
: tell these versions apart?
