Love the photos!!
Interesting how these experiences as teenagers leave such lasting impressions. Also impressive that you made this trip alone, at the age of 15.
I grew up in Birmingham (of the Alabama variety), so I have memories of the local tracks as well as a couple of visits to nearby Talladega Superspeedway, with my father, for a couple of the first NASCAR races held on that track . . . probably 1968 and 1969. Amazing to see this track and hear these cars!!
Of course, Mark Donahue and his 917 also created some memories at Talladega, but his historic laps were not open for the public.

: 40 years ago, when I was 15, I traveled on my own to Silverstone to
: follow the British Formula 1 Grand Prix race. There was a big
: accident on lap 1 that delayed that race for 1 hour but it was
: still a fantastic day for a young boy that had never seen a
: formula car before. As you can see from my old Kodacmatic
: pictures you got very close to the cars and drivers.
: That day influenced me a lot and is directly connected to the fact
: that I now own a Lotus Elan 1968 and collect motorsports
: watches.
: I bought a black/gold John Player Special Lotus nylon jacket that I
: wore proudly when not wearing my hippie afghan coat! Remember it
: was 1973 with Hendrix, handmade chillums, love and peace and my
: friends didn't share my interest in mechanical things.
: Enjoy the race today

: My watch at the time was a Omega Genève Dynamic.
