Let's Discuss -- Why Do People Not Post Full Serial Numbers?

Can we discuss whether there are any valid reasons for not posting full serial numbers?

As someone who maintains an Excel spreadsheet with serial numbers, I can tell you that the 142xxx entry is not as useful as the 142413 entry (for example, in having the spreadsheet compute the gaps between serial numbers).

Are we really worried that someone gets a valid serial number and then produces a batch of the fake cases, with this number? Will someone really file an insurance claim or police report, with your serial number? [These are two of the reasons that I have heard, in other discussions of this topic.]

Who can make the case for the 142xxx approach? It drives me crazy, but I will try to be open minded in understanding this approach!!
